Responsible Gambling — Set Limits, Recognise Signs, Get Help

Quick answer

Gambling can be addictive. Set deposit limits before you have a problem. If you suspect you have a problem, the Mental Health Authority Ghana helpline is +233 302 238 888. SportyBet honours self-exclusion requests — set the period in Account → Responsible Gambling → Self-Exclusion.

If you need help right now

Mental Health Authority Ghana: +233 302 238 888 (24/7)
National helpline: 0800 678 678 (toll-free)

Set deposit limits BEFORE you have a problem

SportyBet supports daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits. Setting them when you’re not in a crisis is far easier than trying to set them after one. The setting is in Account → Responsible Gambling → Deposit Limit.

Suggested defaults for casual punters:

  • Daily limit: GH₵ 100
  • Weekly limit: GH₵ 500
  • Monthly limit: GH₵ 1,500

You can lower limits anytime (takes effect immediately). Raising limits takes effect after a cooling-off period (typically 24-72 hours) — by design.

Warning signs of gambling problems

Any of these is worth a serious self-check:

  1. You bet more than you intended to (escalating stakes).
  2. You chase losses with bigger bets (“I’ll win it back”).
  3. You bet with money meant for rent, food, school fees.
  4. You hide gambling activity from family or partner.
  5. You feel anxious when not betting; relieved when betting.
  6. You think about gambling at work or while doing other things.
  7. You’ve tried to stop and couldn’t.
  8. Friends or family have expressed concern.

One signal is not necessarily a problem. Three or more suggests it’s time to talk to someone.

Self-exclusion — how it works

Self-exclusion lets you block your own account from betting for a chosen period. Once set, you cannot reverse it before the period expires — by design, to protect you from your own future state.

  1. Open SportyBet app → Account → Responsible Gambling → Self-Exclusion.
  2. Choose period: 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, 90 days, 180 days, 1 year, or permanent.
  3. Confirm. Your account is locked for the chosen period.
  4. During the period: you cannot log in, place bets, or access your wallet.
  5. After the period: you can choose to re-enable or extend.

If you’re worried about someone else

If a family member or friend is showing warning signs, useful steps:

  • Don’t lecture or shame — those typically escalate the behaviour, not reduce it.
  • Ask how they’re doing without leading with “you have a problem”.
  • Mention the Mental Health Authority helpline as a resource (without pressuring them to call).
  • Don’t lend money to cover gambling losses — this enables the cycle.
  • Take care of yourself — family of gamblers often need support too. GamAnon (gamanon.org.uk) is for family members.

SportyBet’s responsible gambling rules

  • 18+ only. Underage gambling is illegal in Ghana.
  • Mandatory age verification at certain transaction thresholds.
  • Deposit/loss limits available in Account settings.
  • Self-exclusion supported, periods cannot be reversed before expiry.
  • Time-out (short break) available — 24 hours to 7 days, easier to unwind than self-exclusion.
  • Activity statements available in Account → Activity Log for self-monitoring.
